What to wear at a soccer match.

The Basics

Whether you’re headed to a local game or a Premier league derby, there are some basics that you’ll want to keep in mind when picking out your matchday outfit.

First and foremost, comfort is key. You’ll be sitting (or standing) for long periods of time, so make sure you’re wearing something that won’t leave you feeling uncomfortable or fidgety.

Secondly, it’s important to consider the weather. If it’s cold outside, you’ll want to dress warmly but also consider how easy it will be to remove layers if things heat up (spoiler alert: they probably will).

And lastly, remember that you’ll be surrounded by other people, so avoid anything that’s too revealing or offensive. Now that we’ve got the basics out of the way, let’s move on to some specific suggestions.

The best clothes to wear to a soccer match.

1. A cozy jumper and jeans

This is a great option if you want to be comfortable but also look put-together. It can get chilly in the stadium, so a jumper or sweatshirt will keep you warm without being too heavy.

And jeans are always a good choice because they’re comfortable, good for all weathers and easy to move in.

2. A team jersey

This is an obvious choice, but it’s also a classic for a reason. Wearing your team’s jersey shows that you’re a true fan, and it’s also just really comfortable. You can wear your favourite player’s name on the back, or go for a more general club jersey. Either way, you’ll be repping your team in style.

Authentic jerseys can be expensive, but you can usually find a cheaper replica version on somewhere like eBay or in sports stores. Bonus points if you manage to find one that’s stylish as well!

3. A statement tee

If you really want to show your spirit but soccer jerseys aren’t really your thing, go for a statement tee instead. You can find all sorts of shirts with fun sayings or graphics related to your team (just make sure they’re appropriate!).

Pairing it with jeans or leggings is always a good bet.And a casual leather or camo jacket will complete the look.

4. Comfortable shoes

You’ll be doing a lot of walking and standing during a soccer match, so it’s important to wear comfortable shoes. Trainers are a good option, but make sure they’re not too new or white – you don’t want to be that person whose shoes get ruined by mud and dirt.

That said, you won’t catch many of us wearing anything but our trusty Nike Air Force Ones!

5. A Coat or Jacket

Depending on the weather, you might want to bring along a coat or jacket. If it’s raining, then a raincoat is essential; if it’s cold, then a heavy coat will keep you warm; and if it’s windy, then a jacket will keep you from getting blown away!

We love a leather or bomber jacket for all weathers. Shackets are lightweight enough to carry around too. When the colder weather sets in, you’ll find us in our puffer jackets or training coats, if your team has them. Calf length is a must in winter!

What NOT to wear to a soccer match.

We get it. You want to be stylish. But a footy match is a lot of sitting around on not very comfortable chairs, as well as a lot of walking to and from the game, so it’s important to be comfortable as well as stylish.

With that in mind, here are some things you should avoid wearing to a soccer match.

1. High heels

This should be a no-brainer, but we still see girls (and guys) wearing high heels to soccer matches all the time. Just don’t do it. You’ll be sorry when you’re walking up and down the steps for the hundredth time in your stilettos.

2. Anything too revealing

Again, this should be obvious but we’ll say it anyway: a soccer match is not the time or place to bust out your sexiest outfit. You’ll be sitting close to other people, so avoid anything that’s too low-cut, short or tight.

3. Your best clothes

This isn’t a fashion show, so don’t wear your best clothes to a soccer match. You’re going to be sitting on a often-sticky chair, and there’s a good chance you’ll spill something on yourself. So save those designer threads for another day!

4. Anything too bulky

You’ll be carrying your jacket, scarf and any other bits and pieces around with you all day, so avoid anything that’s too bulky or heavy. A light coat or jacket is fine, but leave the parka at home unless it’s in deep dark winter. Same goes for scarves – go for a lightweight option that won’t take up too much space.

5. Flip flops

We know it’s summer and it’s tempting to just throw on a pair of flip flops and call it a day. But trust us, you’ll regret it when you have to walk 20,000 steps in them. Stick to comfortable shoes that you can walk (and run!) in if you need to.

What should I bring to a soccer match?

Now your outfit’s sorted, time to pack the essentials. Here are a few extra items you might need to take with you to a soccer match:

A bag

You’ll need a bag to carry all your stuff in, so make sure it’s big enough to fit everything but not so big that it’s cumbersome. A crossbody bag is ideal. And if you can, choose one that’s waterproof in case of rain.

A Hat or Visor

Again, this one is dependent on the weather. If it’s sunny, then a hat or visor will protect your eyes from the sun’s glare; if it’s cold, then a hat will keep your head warm; and if it’s raining, then… well, let’s be honest, no one likes wearing a hat when it’s raining!

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are always a good idea, whether it’s sunny or not. Not only do they protect your eyes from the sun (or from being blinded by stadium lights), but they also help to hide any emotional reactions you might have to what’s happening on the field!

Sunscreen

Even if it doesn’t look sunny outside, it’s always a good idea to wear sunscreen when going to a soccer match. The last thing you want is to come home with sunburned cheeks after spending hours cheering on your team!

Snacks and drinks

You’re going to get hungry during the match, so make sure to bring along some snacks and drinks. Non-alcoholic options are best so that you don’t get too rowdy and start chanting obscenities at the opposing team (not that we’ve ever done that…).

What can I not bring to a soccer match?

If you’re going to watch an official match in a stadium, there are some rules as to what you can and can’t bring. Here’s the guidance from Wembley Stadium about prohibited items which you’ll find common across the board.

  • Alcohol
  • Food and drink

  • Weapons and tools
  • Flares, lasers, smoke devices and cannisters

How should I dress for a cold soccer game?

Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. There are plenty of ways to stay warm and look good at the same time. Here are a few tips:

1. Layer up.

Wearing multiple layers is key when dressing for a cold soccer game. Start with a base layer of thermal underwear or a long-sleeved shirt, then add a sweater or fleece on top. If it’s really cold, you can also wear a coat over your other layers.

2. Wear the right shoes.

Wearing the right shoes is important when dressing for a cold soccer game. Choose shoes that are made of waterproof and insulated material to help keep your feet warm and dry. Fur-lined Waterproof Uggs are our faves.

3. Accessorize.

Don’t forget to accessorize! A scarf, hat, and gloves will all help to keep you warm. And if you’re really feeling chilly, you can always try hand warmers or toe warmers.

What should I wear to a rainy soccer game?

If you’re lucky enough to be attending a soccer game in the rain, then there are a few things you’ll need to keep in mind. First, dress for the weather. That means wearing layers that you can easily take on and off as the temperature changes. And second, make sure your shoes are waterproof! Nothing ruins a day out like wet, cold feet.

Here are a few other tips for dressing for a rainy soccer game:

1. Bring a poncho or umbrella.

A rain poncho or umbrella will help to keep you dry when walking to and from the stadium. And if it’s windy, make sure to secure your umbrella so it doesn’t turn inside out!

2. Wear a hat.

A hat will help to keep the rain out of your eyes and off your face. And if it’s cold, a beanie or other type of hat will also help to keep you warm.

3. Bring a bag that can double as a seat cushion.

If the seats at the stadium are wet, bring a bag that can double as a seat cushion. This will help to keep you dry and comfortable during the game.

What should I wear to a hot soccer game?

When dressing for a hot soccer game, it’s important to dress for the weather. That means wearing light, loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabric.

And don’t forget to apply sunscreen! The last thing you want is to get sunburned during the game.

Here are a few other tips for dressing for a hot soccer game:

1. Wear a hat or visor.

A hat or visor will help to keep the sun out of your eyes. And if it’s really hot, a wide-brimmed hat will also help to keep you cool.

2. Dress in layers.

Dressing in layers can help you stay cool in the heat. Start with a light base layer, then add a sleeveless shirt or tank top on top. If it’s really hot, you can always take off your outer layers as needed.

3. Bring along a portable fan.

A portable fan can help you stay cool during the game. Just make sure to keep it pointed towards you so you don’t blow dust and dirt into other people’s faces!

The final score.

So now you know what to wear to a soccer match, whether it’s cold, hot, or raining. Just remember to dress for the weather and you’ll be good to go! Enjoy!
