You cannot backpack without doing at least some hiking, but you can hike without backpacking. So what is the difference? Hiking, sometimes referred to as trekking, is the activity of walking on maintained trails in the wilderness, a natural preserve, or green space in some large cities. While backpacking is hiking on a trail in the wilderness, carrying your gear in a backpack with the intent of staying the night, or several nights on the trail or at a campground.

Before we go over the differences between hiking vs. backpacking, let’s review each one individually.

What is Hiking

Wikipedia defines hiking as “walking lengthy distances in the countryside or wilderness” while this is true, not all hikes have to be long. The best part about hiking is you can make it as hard as you want or as easy. There are plenty of hikes that are less than a mile and give access to amazing sights. Yet others can start early morning and not end until well after dark. The day hike to peak Mt. Whitney is a good example.

The idea of hiking is to spend time walking in nature to get exercise, fresh air, and in many cases spend time with friends or your furry buddy.

Hiking Gear

While hiking can have specialized gear, for the most part, you are going to want a good pair of shoes, proper clothing for the weather, a hydration system, snacks, and a daypack or backpack. Make a checklist so you don’t forget anything and make sure you bring enough water!

The rule of thumb is one liter for every two hours of hiking. If you are new to hiking I’m sure you will be thinking that’s great, but how long will it take me to hike X miles. I’m glad you asked. Typical hikers will travel 2 miles per hour, adding an extra hour for every 1000 feet of elevation gain.

What is Backpacking

Let’s look at Wikipedia again. It says backpacking is “trekking and camping overnight in the wilderness” again hiking. Backpacking includes all the aspects of hiking with a minimum of an overnight trip, sometimes several nights in the wilderness. Backpacking trips will require a lot more gear which you will carry.

Backpacking is a great way to not only get out in nature but spend some quality time away from civilization and see parts of the world that not a lot of people get to experience.

Backpacking Gear

This list can get really long in very short order. Essential gear for backpacking will be everything for hiking plus your tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag or quilt, fire starter, flashlight, stove, cooking utensils, cooking pot or skillet, food, water filtration system, and first-aid kit.

From there people generally go somewhere between ultra-lightweight or bring on the comfort! I don’t care about weight.

Hiking vs. Backpacking

Now that you know the basics of hiking and backpacking let’s compare the two. To start with hiking is a much easier activity to get into. Hiking can easily be done at the end of the day or on an impromptu weekend with minimal planning. Hiking gear is much cheaper and in many cases, you may already have the gear.

Backpacking on the other hand will be much more challenging. If you are not at least in decent shape the trip will be miserable. Hiking gear will be more expensive, but not all of it has to be new. There are many used gear sites that have tents and other items in almost new condition.

Backpacking will take more time to not only plan the hike, but meal plan, and pack your backpack, not to mention your bear canister, and permits. A checklist is needed for sure.

However, backpacking is one of the best ways to get away from it all. There is nothing like having everything you need to survive and going where many people do not. Seeing new areas, and possibly wildlife, and spending time near a campfire in a beautiful location with your friends.

Hiking is a great way to get started with backpacking. Take some time to get used to hiking understand how to read maps and plan your hike. From there backpacking is just a small step into another world of beauty and nature.
